Equinics Races

Sponsored by EQUINICS

A brief history: The origin of SIM residencies is vested in SIM tipsheets. We had the game (and everything revolves around the game) and then people started thinking it would be nice to handcicap the races (betting was a big thing in the early days of the SIM), and like real-life, players started putting together tipsheets. The tipsheets mostly focussed on a single track, although some, like Sal's Grapevine, covered things like your best longshot.

The tipsheets tended to have a net presence and were a big thing in the early days. They were relatively easy to do as each track had only 10 races with smaller fields. Then things got a bit more complicated as the number of tracks grew, and the number of races at each track grew, and the number of horses running in each race at each track grew, and it became difficult to maintain the quality and frequncy of the tipsheets.

Following the establishment of a net presence for most of the tipsheets, some people decided to do little add-ons to the tipsheet. As people became attracted to the tipsheets they started to look for ways to make a contribution other than handicapping the races. Little articles started springing up around the tipsheets, and when breeding was introduced, some people started offering breeding advice. Somewhere in there tipsheet writers started building 'barns' and accepting players as 'residents'.

At first the pure tipsheets were more valued then the pure residencies but the residencies took on a life of their own and were soon recognized as a cornerstone of player enjoyment, and participation.

And so, in 2000, Ldyssecret and Mano started the Equinics to give the Residencies some healthy competition outside of their own walls. Residencies have come and gone; there were some absolute great ones, and some who struggled from day one. It really is something you have to do to appreicate the efforts of Residency Managers to keep a Residency going - to deal with weekly updates, originiating contests, paying prizes, dealing with conflict (big and small), and just plain old trying to have a good time while making a contribution.

And that brings us to this Memorial Race - where we recall the residencies who have participated in the Equinics and are no longer with us.
