The unique Welsh Red Dragon flag adorns this Midas named race for older fillies and mares going a mile on the dirt. With a 9-1 favorite, this is anyone's race. Here are the speedy ladies in the order listed on the official Equinics entry page:
Vermont SLAVE TO AMBITION(KY)
The host residency is well represented by Kendra's Breeders' Bowl champion. The Distorted Humor X Anuenue (Aptitude) five year old has won seven graded stakes including three grade ones and over 2.3 million dollars. Local works have been sparkling and I'm guessing she's all set to rebound from a rare dull effort last time out.
URC ULTIMATE DIAMOND(KY)
Qwikvett Stables' regally bred (A.P. INDY x STORM CAT x DANZIG) four year old arrives in Vermont off a neck loss to the well intended Repeat Performance in a Southern California sprint. Vett's classy lassie is a dual grade I winner and split the field against the big boys in The Bluegrass Derby. Crafty conditioner appears to have her set up perfectly for a top effort.
DelPenn TORCH THE TRACK(ENG)
The Supers send out their front running daughter of Red Ransom and the graded winning Torch Song (Woodman) for this test. The four year old speedster can stalk and pounce if necessary and her versatility may come in very handy here. Proven quality grade I winner deserves much respect.
GR Simsters SAND SNAKE(IRE)
Given Stables' light grey beauty seems to be getting better with age. The six year old El Prado mare from King Niner (Forty Niner) has won three straight. Dan gave her two months off following a busy and successful 2009 campaign and brought her back in a Virginia sprint which she won easily. All signs point toward a big effort on Saturday.
Sim Hispano ARIAS(KY)
Rafa Stables will once again try to get their fine sprinter to stretch out a bit this week. The Corinthian filly, from the five time stakes winner Zaragoza (Fusaichi Pegasus), excels at distances up to seven and one half furlongs, but has had trouble getting that extra sixteenth in three previous attempts. However, Arias is in the best form of her career right now having finished first or second five times in a row while tossing big speed numbers in each race. So it would be no real surprise if she rises to the occasion this time.
Hong Kong Racing Club CAPE CRUSADERS(IRE)
This is my favorite mare in the race. I know, I'm supposed to be impartial. But she was bred using three of my favorite "blue collar" sires (Cape Cross x Niniski x Persian Bold). Mark's quick starting mare probably isn't going to win. Might not hit the board. But next time out, back with her own kind, she'll make her presence felt. And when the six year old is done racing, I'm betting that she'll make a very nice broodmare. Especially since the number one Saints fan bumped Cape Cross to a more elite level this year.
Comedy Central SEEKING A MIRACLE(KY)
Angela hopes her Seeking The Gold mare can successfully take the next step forward and compete with the big girls. This deep closer has hit the board in five of six career stakes tests. Her only miss is excusable since the saddle slipped and she was eased in a Florida grade I. Consistent and tries hard so not impossible.
MIDAS DIABOLU'S PACISCOR(KY)
As it turns out, Supertaffy had a very good idea when she bred Rahy to her stakes winning, graded placed Sadler's Wells mare, Indescribable. The flashy chestnut offspring, now four, is rapidly approaching a half million in career earnings and has been regularly raising eyebrows since her third place finish in the Bluegrass Oaks. Two time graded winner produced speed figs of 111 and 112 respectively while finishing second in a pair of grade II stakes recently. Must be taken seriously.
NWRC BLUE RAISIN(KY)
This Bluegrass Cat x Afternoon Tea (Smart Strike) filly keeps getting better and better. Sports a fancy record (17 9-5-0) and just posted a career best speed number (112) winning a Kansas stake. Rich has her all cranked up for a big mile. If she can take another step forward, watch out!
Blazing Saddles BOSUNSHINE(ENG)
Boble's Pivotal filly will be making her first start since November. She won her two most recent outings, defeating the above mentioned Blue Raisin last time out. Her best quality may be versatility. Shows three gate to wire wins and four where she came from eighth place or further back. Either way, big threat if she fires fresh.
EAAA DEMONIC PRESENCE(KY)
Shamran's millionaire mare has been a star miler for quite a while. Back in '07 she won the first and only Grade I World Cup Juvenile Filly Mile. By Victory Gallop from the stakes winning Mineshaft mare, Sinister Simster, Demonic Presence has won only once in the last nine months. But she has been close often and that victory came in a grade II race two back. Fits very nicely in this star studded field.
OHIO LUCKY'S HEIDI(KY)
Mr. Lucky's Ghostzapper filly is fast and consistent. She was a precocious youngster, winning her debut and taking two stakes in her first five starts. The four year old stalker boasts a win and two seconds in her last three tries. Problem is, this is a killer field and Heidi's best races have come against easier. Longshot.
IRELAND GRAB THE GENE(IRE)
Crawford Incorporated sends out this Generous filly from the well bred (Seeking The Gold x Secretariat x Dr. Fager) Grab The Bag. She has hit the board in half of her thirty six career start and is a very solid allowance miler. Nice filly but in too tough here.
East-West Connection SLAMMED CONNECTION(KY)
Big Oil Andy has entered this interesting Successful Appeal filly. One might dismiss her at first glance since she isn't quite as "sexy" as some of the glamour girls. But after digging around a bit, there are hints of danger. Last July she upset a very good field in a grade II stake. Two back she posted a 108 speed figure finishing second in
The HALF A WORLD AWAY Stakes. And last time out, in a So Cal G-I, she was a nice third, once again earning a 108. Sneaky chance.
STATE CAROLINA HURRICANE(KY)
Rock solid allowance miler has been throwing respectable speed figures lately while winning three of her last five. But CVBear's Toccet x Seth's Bubbles (Forty Niner) six year old will, in all likelihood, find these gals too tough.
BENELUX BAVMORDA(KY)
Amazingly, this Royal Belgian Kempen Farm trained Giant's Causeway five year old has earned a check in every one of her twenty six lifetime starts. She literally never throws a clunker. She has twenty top three finishes including eight wins. Stalker type put together three great races last spring. She won a Vermont stake with a 108 speed mark and then scored in a Georgia stake posting a huge 115 speed figure. You'd think she might bounce off that but instead took The Grade II My Lady in Southern California. Been there or thereabouts in six races since then. Best effort would obviously be good enough to threaten.
MINNESOTA DOWNS INCLUSIVE(KY)
Randy Logan has been training almost ten years now and is not only a fine conditioner, but one of the truly good guys in the game. And his Include x Blushing at War (Rahy) mare has the credentials to pull off an upset. She's won two straight stakes and is graded placed on both surfaces. Big chance to medal for Minny at a nice price.
Great Plains Residency CONTROLLED POWER(KY)
Mr. Fabulous saddles this graded placed chestnut filly for The Red Dragon. Brad was forced to fill a lot of holes for the Great Plains Equinics team which is a lot like the Jamaican Bobsled team, small but very feisty. His Point Given four year old from the much traveled Heir to the Throne (Tale of the Cat) hasn't been real sharp lately. But like the residency for which she races, Controlled Power always tries hard and never gives up.
Alpine Turf Club BLAZING FRONTIER(KY)
This is the "now" horse. Lots of positives for Stlcards Stables' red hot chestnut. The Bernardini filly arrives in Vermont as sharp as possible following two sensational victories, both dirt mile stakes. Two back she crushed a field in Wisconsin. And last time out, went from worst to first in the blink of an eye to capture the weekly feature in Washington. Big shot at a healthy price.
